The
great drama of Calvary, which has inspired poets, painters and artists of all
kinds and in every age, is lived out again in the streets and squares of Romagnano
Sesia, transforming this ancient and historic town into another Jerusalem.
People
of Romagnano from all walks of life, carrying on the tradition passed down by
their forefathers, bring alive the more than three hundred characters who participate
in this re-enactement.
The
originality of the performance as it moves from place to place, and the participation
of the spectators in the action of the drama, have given these performances
a unique character, and it is because of this that it is numbered among the
most famous and significant in Italy.
Faith,
tradition and folklore play their part in giving this secular tradition a curious
spontaneity and an aspect of harmony and solemnity. As in the times of the mediaeval
Mystery Plays, the people are actors and spectators at the same time. The origins
of those "Venerdì Santo" performances are very old indeed.
In
1730 they were reorganized by the Confraternita del Santo Enterro, and
today the Comitato pro Venerdì Santo perpetuate their inheritance
every two years organizing the performances of the Holy Passion
